Background

I was sitting in a small café in Brooklyn when a local asked me what I was up to. I told him I was people watching; I was getting to know the neighbourhood. He responded, “You came down from Toronto to observe me, to get to know my neighbourhood, but do you even know your own neighbours?” I told him I lived in a high-rise tower so I didn’t have a community back home. He responded, “So build one. How can you be a part of my community when you aren’t even a part of yours?”

This is my goal – to build my community. To inspire others to do the same. To bring back what is often lost living in modern residential developments. To improve the lives of children and their families, regardless of background and income level.

It often feels, the greater the city, the greater the distance we create between us.

Let’s bridge the gap and celebrate Halloween. Last year I hosted Halloween for the residents of my building. This year I wanted to take my mission one step further.

My Pledge

For every participating tower I will draw, for free, your building’s custom Halloween map. Similar to a tenant stacking plan, this map will display all the doors open on Halloween to help parents and children navigate their building safely and respectfully. I am doing this the old fashioned way – no apps to download, no complicated tech. Just a simple PDF treasure map.

In the interest of public safety, your custom map will be privately shared directly with resident Facebook group leaders and building management. The map also aims to include a community safety action plan, unique to your building, created in co-operation with your management team.

Call To Action

So decorate your doors and prepare your costumes. Door-Greeters and Trick-or-Treaters, get started here. If there is anything preventing your family from participating, let me know. Do you want to be a Door-Greeter but lack the finances to buy candy this year? Do you have a child with a disability that would benefit from an accommodation? Let me know! Everyone should be celebrating!

When I say “Call To Action” I really am calling EVERYONE

Halloween isn’t just about candy, it is about a child’s social development, mental health, and emotional growth. Halloween is an opportunity for community.

This is why Halloween Map is asking for corporate sponsors, charity grants, and private funding to make Halloween accessible across the GTA, supporting children and families in low-income neighbourhoods.
